Lagos to probe NBC over standard, hygiene

Forty-eight hours after its indictment by a Lagos High Court, for producing products not too good for human consumption, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) may face another round of ‘trial’ before the state government on issues bothering on standard and hygiene of its products.

The Lagos State government may have concluded plans to commence probe on the embattled company should its threat to clamp down on manufacturers of unwholesome water and drinkable produce across the state is anything to go by. It said this shortly after the court penalized NBC for producing products that were unfit for human consumption.

Lamenting that over 50 per cent of patients in Lagos’ hospitals were suffering from water borne related diseases while speaking at a meeting with the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), Executive Secretary of state Water Regulatory Commission, Abdullahi Kabir, said the state government would henceforth commence clamp down on producers or manufacturers of unwholesome water and other drinkable items in the state.

He also appealed to ATWAP to collaborate with the government in fishing out bad eggs among the table water or sachet water manufacturers, saying that production and processing of water and other item such as soft drinks, fruit juice must be carried out in line with the established guideline in the state.
