School urges inclusion of nature study in school curriculum

To ensure that primary and secondary school pupils in the country are conversant with things happening in their environment, Refiners School in Sangotedo, Lekki, Lagos, organised the Green Fingers and Science Fair to enlighten them on essence of nature and how to maintain it.

The Head of Schools, Mrs. Adeola Erosanya, while speaking at the event, which was themed: “Fostering Conservation and Tourism in Nigeria,” noted that the event came about as a result of nature enthusiasts, who are really keen on educating others on the essence of nature when the school started in 2012.
She said that the fair teaches students the importance of having a healthy environment, Mrs. Erosanya stressed the importance of having nature study in secondary and primary schools’ curricula in the country, as failure to do so would mean keeping pupils away from their environment, and making them ignorant of their habitation.
“When nature study is included in the curriculum and students learn about the importance of maintaining nature, our environment will be better, healthier, safer and the closer we get to nature, the healthier we are,” Mrs. Erosanya said.
“We cannot remove nature from our living and our children are going far away from it. We are talking about the ozone layer depletion and so many things are threatening our survival in the environment. If pupils do not know the essence of nature, how to keep it, its importance to our community and the environment, then they will be blank.
